Low Energy Levels

Fatigue and Menopause

Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of menopause. Roughly 80% of women will experience fatigue during menopause. It is more common among women who are undergoing the transition into menopause. Fatigue can make the transition into menopause more difficult by making women increasingly irritable and reducing quality of life.

During menopause, a woman’s body undergoes many changes. Her periods stop, she becomes infertile, and her ovaries stop producing estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The dramatic decrease of these hormone levels result in numerous dreadful menopause symptoms.

Causes of Fatigue during Menopause

Menopause is the primary cause of fatigue. The hormones in the female body control many different processes, and their balance is necessary for well-being. These hormones also control energy at a cellular level; therefore, the loss of estrogen and progesterone during menopause results in decreased energy levels.

Thyroid and adrenal hormones also play a role in regulating energy levels. Thyroid and cortisol levels decrease naturally, especially during menopause, resulting in constant fatigue.

Although fatigue is mostly caused by hormonal changes during menopause, other menopause symptoms may also lead to fatigue. For example, depression or insomnia (difficulty sleeping) can also result in fatigue.

Diagnosis

Menopausal women undergoing menopause may notice a significant decline in energy levels that could last all day or for short periods of time throughout the day. You may be experiencing fatigue if you suffer common symptoms such as decreased wakefulness, decreased attention spans, and increased drowsiness/tiredness.
