Sledgehammer Swings - Exercise Guide

Step 1

You need a sledgehammer and a heavy tire for this exercise.
Place a heavy tire on the floor.

Step 2

Hold a sledgehammer with both hands. Have your dominant hand grip the handle closer to the head and your lesser dominant hand at the bottom. In this way, it will be easier for you to control the sledgehammer,

Step 3

Stand up straight around two feet away from the tire with your feet in a staggered stance.

Step 4

Bring the sledgehammer overhead and finally to your back. As you do this, have your dominant hand slide up further until it’s almost touching the head of the hammer.

Step 5

Pause for a moment then slam the sledgehammer down as powerful as you can against the tire. As you slam down, have your dominant hand slide down until it’s together with your non-dominant hand. In this way, more force will hit the tire. Once the tire hits, control the bounce of the hammer off the tire.

Step 6

Complete for a number of repetitions then switch side sides and repeat.
