Eating Wise: Healthy Food To Eat For Men and Women 50 and Above
Wednesday, April 13th, 2016

With age comes wisdom. A healthier change in diet? Not so much. After all, a lot of people in their mid-lives continue to eat the same things in the same manner and amounts as they did ten, twenty, or even thirty years ago. Of course, they still can, but that doesn’t mean they should. Not to sound ageist, but as we grow older, different medical conditions surface, causing some foods to be detrimental to health. Because of this, our diet should become healthier as the years go by.

There’s always hormone replacement therapy in Florida or some other state or country, but they can’t exactly cure anything and everything. Instead, here are a few foods for people in their fifties and above.

  • Apples – The saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” is older than half a century, and for a good reason. These popular fruits rich in soluble fiber, which help lower cholesterol and slow down the uptake of glucose, perfect for those who are struggling with diabetes and high levels of cholesterol in the blood. In addition, they are a great source of potassium, which helps in muscle contraction, and Vitamin C, which helps fight infection.
  • Asparagus – There’s this common notion that asparagus is for old people. That’s where they’re wrong, because it’s actually for people who make wise health choices. This vegetable is rich in lycopene, which helps protect the prostate, lowering the risk of prostate cancer, making it a must-eat for men who are fifty and above. Also, asparagus is rich in Vitamin A, which helps maintain and improve both eyesight and the immune function. And lastly, it contains iron, an important element for the blood.
  • Broccoli – Remember how you used to avoid broccoli on the dinner table. Well, those days are over, and for good reason.Broccoli is high in fiber, which helps in bowel movement; antioxidants, which slows down the ageing process and prevents the growth of cancer cells; and vitamins A, C, B9, and K. It’s a tremendous help to your eyes, blood, immune system, colon and bones! Now, who wants broccoli?
  • Oatmeal – Ah, oatmeal, the breakfast of choice for many people, and you’re probably one of them. Once you hear about its many health benefits, however, it’s going to be your meal of choice for lunch and dinner.Aside from being high in soluble fiber, oatmeal is low in fat, high in protein, and rich in iron and other important minerals. And get this – a cup of oatmeal, which is already filling as it is, only contains 166 calories! With all of these things it offers, it’s the perfect food for those who need to lose weight or have hypertension.
  • Dark Chocolate – Here’s a sweet reward for all those fruits and vegetables – dark chocolate. Of course, not too sweet.Dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids and polyphenols, antioxidants that help prevent heart attacks by preventing the clogging of arteries. In addition, a lot of studies suggest that even small amounts of dark chocolate regularly help lower blood pressure. Now who said chocolate is bad for you?Being in your fifties doesn’t mean eating healthy but boring and tasteless food. Thankfully, healthy foods aren’t dull and uninteresting. So, have you already planned your next meal? If not, then you now have a good idea which ones toincorporate in your diet!
