What Is PMS?

Premenstrual syndrome, also known as PMS, occurs during normal menstruation and results in unpleasant emotional and physical symptoms. The frequency and severity of these symptoms vary from woman to woman. To diagnose PMS, the following criteria must be met:

  • Both the emotional and physical symptoms need to be present and must be severe enough to interfere with daily life.
  • Symptoms must consistently occur approximately ten days prior to the beginning of menstruation and resolve immediately prior to or during the menstrual flow.

The premenstrual syndrome occurs more commonly in women:

  • Between their late 20s and early 40s
  • Who have at least one child
  • Who has a personal or family history of major depression
  • Who have a history of postpartum depression or an affective mood disorder

PMS symptoms typically get worse in a woman’s late 30s and 40s, during the early transition years of menopause (i.e., perimenopause).

What Causes PMS?

The exact cause of PMS is not clearly understood. PMS is thought to be due to hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle, particularly the fluctuation of estrogen and/or progesterone. Premenstrual syndrome is estimated to affect up to 75% of women during their childbearing years.

Lack of certain vitamins and minerals (such as vitamin B6, calcium, or magnesium) can increase the likelihood of developing PMS. High stress, lack of exercise and excess caffeine consumption can also worsen symptoms of PMS.
