Vitamin D and Cardiovascular Health

Vitamin D can also help reverse heart damage and protect against cardiovascular diseases. Because it has beneficial effects on various cardiovascular parameters such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, vitamin D can be an important nutrient for the maintenance of a healthy heart. A growing number of studies support the cardiovascular effects of vitamin D:
1. Vitamin D deficiency significantly increases one’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease and related deaths. [728-747]
2. In adults with cardiovascular disease, very modest amount of vitamin D (500 IU) is associated with 8% reduction in all-cause mortality. [748-749]
3. Vitamin D helps improve recovery of the cells of the heart (cardiomyocytes) after an injury, suggesting that it can help reverse damage. [750]
4. In patients with heart failure, vitamin D supplementation significantly reduces inflammatory cytokines (involved in the development of heart disease). [751-754]
5. In patients with chronic heart failure, one year of 4,000 IU/day of vitamin D3 is associated with 6.1% improvement in ejection fraction (percentage of blood leaving the heart during each contraction). [755]
6. Vitamin D prevents cardiovascular disease by inhibiting plaque formation in the heart. [756]
7. Vitamin D is involved in the regulation of growth and reproduction of smooth muscle cells and cardiomyocytes. [757-759]
8. In frail elderly patients, vitamin D supplementation is associated with 7% significant mortality reduction. [760]
9. In hemodialysis patients and those with heart failure, vitamin D supplementation reduces natriuretic peptide (a diagnostic marker of heart failure) and left ventricular mass, as well as improves left ventricular function. [761-767]
10. In patients with heart failure, vitamin D supplementation decreases disease severity as evidenced by significant reduction in natriuretic peptide levels and an increase in walking distance. [768]
11. In hemodialysis patients, vitamin D supplementation reduces important surrogate markers of cardiovascular risk such as systemic inflammation and left ventricular hypertrophy.
12. Early intervention with vitamin D supplementation is an ideal approach towards preventing childhood cardiovascular disease. [770]
13. Vitamin D3 prevents heart disease by regulating the inflammatory response in human coronary arterial endothelial cells. [771]
14. In patients with heart disease and elderly people, vitamin D administration is associated with a statistically significant reduction in mortality and cardiovascular risk. [772-777]
15. In elderly population, restoration of vitamin D levels to normal significantly improves heart muscle contractility and walking capacity. [778]
16. In patients suffering from heart failure, vitamin D supplementation improves functional activity and severity of congestive heart failure. [779]
