Hormone Replacement Therapy and the Side Effects That You Need To Know
Monday, February 1st, 2016

There comes a time in every human being’s life wherein their systems will begin to shut down. The energy they once had when they were younger, slowly depreciated, and as their body continues to age, actions such as running, hearing, and remembering a note that was written only a few days ago, becomes nearly impossible to do. These events are not strangers to the older generation, because they know that it is all part of the latter stages of aging. The human body is organic, and when people reach a certain age, it can no longer keep up with the demands the system needs. This is also the reason why almost all seniors feel multiple aches and pains, in certain areas of their body. However, do not think that these problems will come all at once when people reach the age of 65; because even during the “midlife” transition, the body will experience a number of inconveniences, some of which cannot be seen by the naked eye or cannot be immediately felt and/or detected.

Both men and women experience the negative effects of aging, but approach them differently. For example, women have to deal with menopause, while men go through andropause. Some health issues, such as hypothyroidism, occur mostly to females, while men, in this stage of life, are more prone to having prostate cancer. With the amount of changes their bodies are experiencing, it can be difficult to conquer the uphill battle. There are cases however, of men and women making it through the end of their midlife, by entering their senior years without having to face any severe problems, but most of the time, going through these painful and stressful effects is not a pretty sight.

From the constant back and forth of mood swings to the visible spots of baldness, men and women, who are currently in their midlife, are facing one of their most difficult battles yet. With their body not producing as much hormones or functioning the way they are supposed to, they are left struggling with completing even the most simple of tasks. Luckily, with the help of modern medicine, completing this stage would not have to be a horrible experience, because with the help of Hormone Replacement Therapy, the middle aged men and women of the world, can move on to the next stage of life without having to suffer.

What is Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy is a treatment for people who are experiencing hormonal imbalances. Moreover, this does not only apply to those who are having trouble adjusting in their midlife, and was created to serve anyone whose bodies can no longer produce the amount of hormones it needs. By replacing it with supplements that create the hormone the person needs, the body will revert back to its balanced state, in due time.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Yes. Hormone replacement therapy does produce side effects, but patients should not be too concerned because it is all part of the process. Their bodies are receiving hormones that are not being naturally produced by their systems and need time to adjust. However, once it becomes familiar with the regular intake, the side effects will eventually tone down. The effects will differ, depending on the type of therapy the person is using, but for popular hormones, like progestogen and estrogen, they may experience the following:

  • Bloating
  • Breast swelling and/or tenderness
  • Leg cramping
  • Back aches
  • Nausea
  • Fluid retention
  • Headaches
  • Indigestion
  • Breakouts/ acne
  • Mood swings

Although these side effects do seem uncomfortable, keeping a balanced diet, and regular exercise and stretching, can help alleviate the discomfort.
The process of hormone replacement therapy does not magically make the problem disappear. Patients need to take their prescribed medicine diligently, in order to make it work. It may not be the quickest of methods, but it is capable of producing more comfortable results.
