Because of constant use, disuse, and misuse of our body and its natural deterioration due to the ageing process, we become more and more vulnerable against disorders and communicable diseases. Thankfully, there is hormone replacement therapy in Florida that can help alleviate the signs and symptoms of these illnesses.
Wouldn’t it be better to not get sick in the first place? If only that was the way the world works! To better enlighten and arm yourself as you and your body mature, here are some of the most common diseases and disorders for people in their sixties.
Hypertension – The first signs of hypertension usually show in your forties, but it carries over to your sixties. It is caused by hereditary factors and lifestyle choices – smoking, drinking, eating of fatty and salty foods – and marked by increased blood pressure, headaches, and pains at the back of the neck and sometimes the eyes. In short, hypertension can lead to cerebrovascular accidents, more commonly known as stroke. To avoid hypertension, you must make necessary lifestyle adjustments such as diet, regular taking of anti-hypertensive drugs, and consistent medical checkup.
Osteoarthritis – The cartilages, soft and slippery tissues at the end of your bones that allow frictionless joint motion become worn out as time goes on. With the cartilages already deteriorated, the once-smooth joint movement has become difficult and painful. And usually, the most affected joints are the hands, toes, knees, back, and hips. This condition is known as osteoarthritis. It is possible to ease the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Exercise strengthens your muscles, allowing your joints, which have lost their smoothness, to become stronger. Another would be maintaining the proper weight because less weight would mean less strain on the joints, especially on the knees, as it’s them that bears your weight. Also, if the joint pains get too unbearable, applying heat and cold and over-the-counter ointments help temporarily relieve the pain. And lastly, assistive devices can be a big help, as it assists in joint movement, allowing the joints to exert less effort.
Diabetes – One of the most common metabolic diseases of seniors would be type-2 diabetes. People may develop diabetes due to hereditary factors, environmental factors, and lifestyle-related factors such as poor diet choices and lack of exercise. This disease becomes even more problematic as age progresses, as it develops symptoms such as numbness, frequent thirst and hunger, slower healing of wounds, and even blindness. To help cope with the symptoms of diabetes, significantly less intake of simple sugars and sources of carbohydrates, maintaining proper weight, and exercise are a must. Also, constant monitoring of blood sugar is crucial, as it will tell you how certain factors such as what you eat and your activities affect your blood sugar.
Heart Diseases – Heart diseases remain as one of the most common causes of death of adults 65 years old and above. This is a usual occurrence due to the abundance of risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol diet, and excessive stress.Light exercise, less intake of cholesterol, salt, and caffeine, and adherence to medication and doctor’s advice can improve quality of life despite the development of cardiovascular diseases.Ageing isn’t supposed to mean growing weak and sickly.
